Security Alert | Terrorist Threat to SA Malls and Shopping Areas

Sunday, June 05, 2016 – The U.S. Embassy yesterday released a statement warning of plans by terrorist groups to carry out attacks in South Africa targeted at upscale shopping malls and areas where U.S. citizens frequent.

“The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South Africa informs U.S. citizens that the U.S. Government has received information that terrorist groups are planning to carry out near-term attacks against places where U.S. citizens congregate in South Africa, such as upscale shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This information comes against the backdrop of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s public call for its adherents to carry out terrorist attacks globally during the upcoming month of Ramadan.”

According to Reuters, South Africa’s foreign affairs department said the country’s security agencies were capable of ensuring the safety of its residents, noting that no incident or attack had taken place after the previous warning by the U.S. embassy last year.

The South African Police were not available to comment to Reuters about the warning.

Please take precautions and try limit the amount of time spent in these areas in the short term. Report any suspicious activity to the SAPS.
